Case Study: Gemological Institute of America achieves faster, more accurate diamond grading with IBM

A IBM Case Study

GIA and IBM team up to revolutionize the diamond industry

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) wanted to modernize the diamond clarity grading process, which is complex and highly manual, by using AI to help analyze millions of diamonds each year. GIA partnered with IBM and IBM Research to build a cloud-based solution that could improve speed, consistency, and accuracy while protecting the integrity of diamond grading.

IBM implemented an AI and cloud platform using IBM Cloudant, IBM Cloud, IBM Cloud Kubernetes Service, IBM Cloud App ID, and IBM Cloud Object Storage. The solution is designed to handle 70%–80% of diamond evaluations over time, with GIA expecting faster turnaround times and more repeatable results; it is already being tested in 2 of GIA’s 11 labs as IBM continues supporting the move toward full production.
