Fraport AG cuts costs and boosts performance for SAP

Fraport AG, the operator of Frankfurt International Airport, faced the challenge of rapidly growing data volumes in its key SAP environment, which made the systems increasingly expensive to support. To succeed in the competitive airport industry, the company needed to lower its IT costs while maintaining excellent service levels.

Working with IBM, Fraport migrated its 26 SAP systems from Oracle to the IBM DB2 database platform. This solution dramatically compressed data volumes by an average of 47%, saving nearly 6 TB of storage. The project resulted in a 45% reduction in total cost of ownership, a 10% average performance improvement, and faster backup times. IBM’s solution, including subsequent upgrades to POWER7 servers, delivered significant cost savings and efficiency gains.
