A IBM Case Study
CMC Electronics, a company designing flight management systems for the aviation industry, sought to modernize its development process. Their challenge was to create a new object-oriented, model-based process to build a single core architecture for its next-generation products, which also needed to comply with strict aviation industry standards like DO-178C. To address this, they partnered with vendor IBM.
The solution implemented by IBM involved the IBM Rational Rhapsody toolset, which provided a collaborative environment for design, development, and testing. This model-driven approach fostered the creation of portable, reusable components, automated documentation for compliance, and built-in end-to-end traceability. The results for CMC included accelerated development, a significant reduction in defects, and marked improvements in productivity measured in lines of code generated per person-hour.
