Case Study: ExxonMobil achieves more efficient global LNG routing with IBM Quantum

A IBM Case Study

Preview of the ExxonMobil Case Study

ExxonMobil strives to solve complex energy challenges

ExxonMobil faced the challenge of efficiently moving LNG around the world as part of its “dual challenge” of providing reliable, affordable energy while reducing emissions. With more than 500 LNG ships and an extremely complex routing problem, ExxonMobil turned to IBM and IBM Quantum to explore whether quantum computing could help optimize maritime logistics.

IBM worked with ExxonMobil to model maritime inventory routing on quantum devices and compare routing strategies, building a foundation for future practical solutions. The collaboration gave ExxonMobil new insight into complex optimization problems and prepared both companies to tackle larger-scale routing and energy challenges as IBM’s quantum hardware evolves.
