Enhancing patient outcomes with real-time analysis of vital signs

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) needed to turn massive volumes of physiological monitoring data into near‑real‑time clinical insight to improve patient outcomes, especially for critical tasks like verifying endotracheal tube placement. To meet this challenge CHOP partnered with IBM, leveraging IBM Hybrid Cloud technologies and components such as InfoSphere Streams, IBM BigInsights and PureData System for Analytics to move from retrospective analysis to streaming analytics.

IBM implemented an enterprise stream‑computing platform that ingests sensor data from thousands of monitors across 550 beds via a medical device integration layer, assigns master time codes and runs predictive models in real time. The pilot model—co‑developed with CHOP clinicians—identifies tube type and placement with 81% accuracy (specificity 80%, sensitivity 84%) within the first five minutes of intubation, enabling faster intervention, real‑time alerts through Epic and a scalable foundation for additional clinical decision‑support use cases.
