Case Study: Critical Care Research Group achieves faster global ICU COVID-19 insights with IBM

A IBM Case Study

Preview of the Critical Care Research Group Case Study

During critical moments, a matter of life, death and data

The Critical Care Research Group at The University of Queensland launched the COVID Critical Care Consortium to help ICU clinicians make better decisions during the early COVID-19 pandemic, when treatment guidance was scarce and information was scattered across papers, spreadsheets, and ad hoc channels. The group needed a fast, reliable way to turn global patient data into bedside insights for overwhelmed clinicians, and worked with IBM to address that challenge.

IBM helped design and build the Patient Outcome Indicator Dashboard and related clinical app using IBM Consulting, IBM Cloud, IBM Security, and IBM iX design thinking. The solution let clinicians enter de-identified patient data, filter by key variables, and compare cases against global outcomes on mobile, tablet, and desktop; within eight weeks it was in testing. The effort contributed to a database with 3,600+ de-identified cases from 370+ hospitals in 50+ countries, helping clinicians compare patients worldwide and support prognosis, resourcing, and treatment decisions.
