Case Study: Wintershall Dea AG achieves scalable AI-driven data science transformation with IBM Consulting

Drilling down into data to transform the oil and gas industry

Wintershall Dea AG, one of Europe’s leading independent gas and oil companies, needed a way to connect data across its newly expanded organization after a merger and scale AI beyond isolated pilot projects. To support its AI@Scale initiative, the company turned to IBM Consulting and IBM AI@Scale on Microsoft Azure to create a centralized, scalable foundation for data science and AI.

IBM helped Wintershall Dea build the technical architecture, operating model, and governance for its AI Center of Competence, while also training employees and guiding use-case development. The results included more than 80 identified AI and data science use cases, over 100 employees trained, automated extraction from 2,000 PDF documents, and a production AI solution for well integrity monitoring that can detect anomalies and alert engineers, with plans to scale further across wells and business units.
