A IBM Case Study
Container Centralen, a European provider of reusable plant and flower shipping containers, faced a significant challenge with counterfeiting. Approximately 20 percent of the containers in its 3.5 million-unit pool were counterfeit, leading to lost lease revenue and the company being forced to maintain containers it did not own. The company worked with IBM, utilizing its Global Business Services for application development and WebSphere Sensor Events, to address this problem.
IBM implemented a custom RFID control system designed to eliminate counterfeit containers and track the total number in circulation. This smarter solution provided Container Centralen with up to 30 percent savings in container processing costs and enabled significant customer price reductions. It also established the infrastructure for sophisticated track-and-trace systems, creating a more efficient supply chain.
