Boston Children’s Hospital and IBM harness social education

Boston Children's Hospital identified a global challenge in pediatric critical care, where a lack of access to expert medical education was creating disparities in care, especially in regions with high infant mortality rates. To overcome the limitations of the traditional apprenticeship model, they partnered with vendor IBM and its IBM Interactive team to develop a solution using a suite of IBM software including IBM SmartCloud, IBM Connections, and IBM Cognos.

The solution implemented by IBM was OPENPediatrics, a cloud-based social learning platform that delivers training videos, simulators, and peer-reviewed content to healthcare workers worldwide. This IBM solution created a global community for knowledge sharing and enabled offline access, which was crucial for areas with limited internet. Results included over 1,000 users in 74 countries reporting improved procedures and reduced infection rates, directly enhancing patient care and moving the hospital closer to its goal of reducing child mortality.
