Case Study: SOSCIP boosts research collaboration and economic growth with IBM high-performance computing and analytics

A IBM Case Study

Preview of the Southern Ontario Smart Computing Innovation Platform (SOSCIP) Case Study

Boosting long-term economic development with cutting-edge collaborative research

Southern Ontario Smart Computing Innovation Platform (SOSCIP) faced the challenge of providing Ontario's small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with access to high-performance computing and advanced data analytics to accelerate research and foster economic development. Partnering with vendor IBM, SOSCIP sought to create a collaborative ecosystem to keep research talent in the province and help businesses commercialize new ideas.

IBM implemented four advanced computing platforms as the solution, including a Blue Gene/Q supercomputer and Canada's first research-dedicated cloud analytics platform running IBM InfoSphere, Cognos, and SPSS software. This enabled groundbreaking collaborative research, resulting in the creation of 280 new jobs within two years. The partnership is forecasted to generate over CAD66 million in revenue in five years and has led to commercialized projects, such as a new company analyzing real-time infant health data.
