Amica Mutual Insurance was undertaking a large policy-administration modernization when inconsistent, error-prone deployment processes began stalling testing and forcing developers to spend time troubleshooting environment and version issues. To automate and make deployments repeatable, Amica turned to IBM and its IBM UrbanCode Deploy software to address the logistical nightmare of ensuring the right versions of services and dependent code were installed across multiple environments.

IBM’s implementation—with Amica’s Application Configuration Management team integrating IBM UrbanCode Deploy with existing open-source tools and static code analysis—created repeatable, quality-gated deployments and “snapshots” that can be moved between environments. The result: deployment times dropped 95–98% (from three days to about one hour for new services and 15 minutes for existing ones), tester downtime was virtually eliminated, and developers were freed from deployment troubleshooting.
