A IBM Case Study
The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, one of Africa's leading financial institutions, faced challenges with its aging core-banking infrastructure. It sought to expand its reach, improve responsiveness, and offer new services, but its outdated systems restricted growth and relied on inefficient, paper-based processes for most of its branches. To support its vision of becoming a world-class bank by 2025, the customer partnered with IBM and selected Oracle 11g database software as the foundation for its transformation.
IBM implemented a resilient core-banking platform using IBM Power servers, IBM System Storage, and associated software including AIX and PowerHA. Working with its Global Business Services team, IBM integrated the Temenos T24 Core Banking application to create a high-performance, highly available system. The results were transformative: the bank grew from 300 to 868 branches, reduced bank transfer times by 99% (from days to just 10 minutes), and now supports 500,000 daily transactions, accelerating business growth significantly.
