SupPlant builds world’s first sensor-less smart irrigation solution

SupPlant, an agricultural technology company focused on improving crop yields and saving water, faced the challenge of making smart irrigation accessible to small and medium-sized farms that often lack the resources or expertise to install hardware. Working with IBM, SupPlant used IBM watsonx Orchestrate and IBM DataStax Astra DB within IBM watsonx.data to build a sensor-less solution that could deliver tailored crop and weather guidance at scale.

IBM helped SupPlant launch Plant ;), which uses satellite imagery and AI agents to provide farmers personalized irrigation updates, alerts, and plot analysis through WhatsApp. The results include around 50,000 farmers using the service worldwide, 500–1,000 new users joining daily, and an 80% user satisfaction rate, with strong engagement that is helping farmers make better decisions and improve crop health.
