A IBM Case Study
The State Customs Committee of Uzbekistan needed to modernize a labor-intensive customs declaration process that was slowing down operations, increasing the risk of human error, and making it harder to improve accuracy and compliance. To address rising volumes and complex goods descriptions, the committee partnered with IBM and used IBM watsonx.ai and IBM watsonx.data to explore AI-driven automation.
IBM implemented an AI-powered API using generative AI and machine learning to extract structured data, classify products, and integrate with the committee’s digital customs systems. The results were dramatic: processing time dropped from 2–3 hours to seconds, more than 80,000 declarations were processed automatically in 2024, and the project generated an additional USD 246,000 in revenue, while improving speed, accuracy, and compliance.
