Walmart traces mango provenance in 2.2 seconds with Hyperledger Fabric

Walmart faced the challenge of tracing the source of food-borne illnesses, a process that could take weeks and result in massive food waste. To enhance transparency and safety in its complex food supply network, Walmart turned to the vendor Hyperledger and implemented a solution using Hyperledger Fabric, an enterprise-grade blockchain framework.

The solution built on Hyperledger Fabric drastically improved traceability. For mangoes in the US, the time to trace provenance was reduced from 7 days to 2.2 seconds. The system also brought more trust to the supply chain, such as by uploading certificates for pork in China. As a result, Walmart now traces over 25 products using the system and is requiring its suppliers of fresh leafy greens to use it, demonstrating the measurable impact and scalability of the Hyperledger technology.
