Case Study: Joisto (electronic archive provider) achieves GDPR-compliant, immutable document storage with Hyperledger Fabric

A Hyperledger Case Study

Preview of the Joisto Case Study

Joisto Meets Document and Data Storage Security Regulations of GDPR—and Ensures Trust—Using Hyperledger Fabric

Joisto, a multi‑tenant electronic archive and retrieval platform handling large volumes and over 1,000 document and data types for finance, government and utilities, faced growing customer demand to meet GDPR requirements for irrefutable storage and proof of integrity. To add that layer of trust, Joisto chose Hyperledger and built its solution on Hyperledger Fabric to meet needs for enterprise-grade, non‑Proof‑of‑Work blockchain functionality and multi‑tenancy.

Using Hyperledger Fabric, Joisto implemented a blockchain‑enabled Archive that stores cryptographic checksums and event logs on‑chain while keeping documents off‑chain, preserving GDPR compliance with a single data controller. The Hyperledger‑based design gives each commercial participant a private channel, lowers hardware and admin overhead, provides immutable evidence of document integrity, and enables a shift from volume‑based to value‑based billing; Joisto commercialized the product in 2020 with plans for live beta clients by Q4 and recognition as Document Manager Awards 2019 Compliance Product of the Year.
