British Columbia cuts red tape with Hyperledger Indy for 529,000 companies and 1.4 million credentials

The government of British Columbia, in collaboration with Ontario and the Canadian government, sought to reduce the significant burden of regulatory red tape faced by businesses, which was costing Canadian companies an estimated C$10 billion annually. Their challenge was to streamline government services and make verifying business information faster and more efficient. They partnered with vendor Hyperledger and utilized its Hyperledger Indy framework to address this.

The solution involved building the Verifiable Organizations Network (VON) and creating OrgBook BC, a searchable online directory powered by Hyperledger Indy. This provided digital identities for over 529,000 companies and 1.4 million verifiable credentials, reducing the time for due diligence checks from hours to seconds. The project was developed collaboratively for approximately C$2 million, saving taxpayer money versus individual development. Hyperledger's open-source framework was extended through this partnership, and the success of OrgBook BC has led to plans for similar services in other jurisdictions.
