Case Study: Barton Malow boosts employee engagement and gamifies problem-solving with HYPE Innovation

A HYPE Innovation Case Study

Preview of the Barton Malow Case Study

Building an Engaged Innovation Culture

Barton Malow is a nearly century-old, employee-owned US construction management firm with more than 2,200 team members across North America. With staff spread across 15 offices and dozens of projects, the company struggled to share improvement initiatives consistently and had no centralized way for employees to submit, comment on, and vote for ideas, limiting visibility into frontline pain points and opportunities.

Barton Malow implemented Planbox’s Innovation Game — a gamified platform rolled out to all employees that uses points tied to recognition, prizes, monetary rewards and part of annual bonuses to motivate activities like submitting ideas, attending webinars and completing surveys. The program drove measurable results: survey response rates rose by 66%, more than 29,400 ideas were submitted since 2018, and the company saw higher engagement, numerous field-level improvements and actionable solutions.
