A Hyland Case Study
Sharp HealthCare, a San Diego-based not-for-profit system with multiple hospitals and thousands of providers, has a long track record of healthcare IT innovation. After early wins with an enterprise content management (ECM) pilot, Sharp faced the challenge of scaling ECM across the organization, integrating unstructured content with its EMR, reducing paper reliance, and improving access and compliance without disrupting clinical workflows.
Sharp deployed OnBase by Hyland integrated with Cerner Millennium, uploading paper and scanned documents into ECM before EMR go‑live and expanding department by department while automating workflows and adding mobile forms. The result: enterprise-wide access to complete patient information from the EMR, standardized paperless workflows, stronger disaster recovery and compliance, higher clinician satisfaction, and measurable savings—including eliminating 100,000 monthly paper claims (reducing staffing and saving about $70,000/month)—while continuing to roll out scanning at point-of-care and other efficiency projects.
