Case Study: University College London Hospital achieves seamless, in‑EPR access to patient images and documents with Hyland OnBase

A Hyland Case Study

Hyland helps one of the largest NHS Foundation Trusts implement an integrated content management platform with its EPR

University College London Hospital (UCLH), one of the UK’s largest academic health centres caring for over a million patients a year, was implementing a modern electronic patient record (EPR) but faced a gap: the EPR could not natively manage large volumes of legacy and pre-hospital unstructured data, or hospital-generated documents and clinical images (eg, ECGs, consent forms, medical photos). Stakeholders were initially hesitant to expand the project, but UCLH concluded an enterprise document management solution was essential to deliver a complete, accessible patient record.

UCLH selected Hyland’s OnBase and integrated it with their Epic EPR, aligning EDMS, PACS and workflows and training an “army” of superusers. The integration delivers seamless in-context access to scanned documents and images at the point of care, eliminating paper pulls for clinics, speeding clinical decisions, enabling remote wound-image monitoring from patient phones, and strengthening business continuity—outcomes that clinicians and patients report as significantly improving care and efficiency.
