Backup and Recovery Platform Refresh Improves Availability and Efficiency for a Public Utility

Taunton Municipal Lighting Plant (TMLP), a municipal electric utility serving about 38,000 customers in southeastern Massachusetts, needed to refresh its aging datacenter infrastructure while rolling out a new ERP system. The seven-year-old environment was difficult for a small IT team to manage and no longer met growing demands for availability, performance, and support across TMLP’s generation, corporate, and distribution environments. TMLP turned to HYCU, alongside Nutanix, for a simpler backup and recovery platform that could support future growth.

HYCU helped TMLP implement Nutanix Mine with HYCU in a staged deployment, starting with the generation plant and expanding to the corporate environment. The new setup improved availability, added redundancy for critical operations, and streamlined backup and recovery administration. TMLP reported a 500% improvement in RTO at the generation plant, a reduction in corporate RTO to 2 hours from 24–48 hours, and a 90% reduction in turnaround time for testing and development data refreshes. The project also delivered estimated yearly licensing and maintenance savings of 50%, reduced rack space by about 60%, and lowered power and cooling costs.
