Case Study: Mobile network operators expand rural coverage cost-effectively with Hughes JUPITER System

A Hughes Network Systems Case Study

Preview of the Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) Case Study

Mobile Network Operators extend rural coverage with Hughes JUPITER across 8,000 cellular backhaul sites

The customer, mobile network operators (MNOs), faced the challenge of cost-effectively extending cellular service to rural and remote areas where terrestrial infrastructure was too expensive to deploy. To address this, they turned to Hughes Network Systems and its JUPITER System for satellite cellular backhaul.

Hughes implemented its JUPITER System, a high-throughput VSAT platform that provides efficient and economical satellite backhaul. The solution delivered excellent results, enabling MNOs to profitably serve new, remote customer bases. For example, Vodacom DRC initially installed 800 cell sites using the JUPITER platform, quickly growing its subscriber base and later upgrading over 100 sites to 3G service. Hughes highlights that its technology is the most widely used VSAT system in the world.
