Media Networks Latin America - Customer Case Study

Media Networks Latin America (MNLA), the B2B unit of Telefonica Digital, needed a cost-effective way to extend 3G and LTE coverage and improve mobile broadband in rural and hard-to-serve areas across Latin America by backhauling Small Cells. To meet rising demand for high-bandwidth services (music, video streaming, VoIP) and to expand its Ka‑band HTS portfolio beyond Ku-band DTH, MNLA partnered with Hughes Network Systems and deployed the Hughes JUPITER High Throughput System (HTS) over the Hispasat Amazonas‑3 Ka‑band satellite.

Hughes Network Systems delivered a complete JUPITER solution—gateways, remote VSAT terminals (>100 Mbps IP throughput), and network management—with Alcatel‑Lucent Small Cells certified over the satellite link. The certified satellite backhaul achieved ~600 ms RTT and ~15 ms jitter with ~20 Mbps down / 3 Mbps up to a Small Cell, supported remote commissioning that lets resellers commission sites within hours, and eliminated many site revisits via an Onsite Verification Tool. The scalable, “lights‑out” gateway operation managed from MNLA’s NOC enabled rapid rollouts, expanded coverage, and the ability to scale to tens of thousands of users while delivering improved voice and data service.
