Case Study: Maju Nusa Sdn Bhd (Majunusa) achieves cost-effective cellular connectivity in remote Malaysia with Hughes Network Systems' HX satellite backhaul

A Hughes Network Systems Case Study

Preview of the Majunusa Case Study

Hughes together with Maju Nusa Sdn Bhd Helps Bring Cellular Services to Remote and Underserved Areas of Malaysia

Majunusa, a Malaysian managed network service provider contracted to support the government’s Universal Service Provision, faced the challenge of extending reliable 2G/3G cellular coverage to roughly 8 million people in rural and remote areas where terrestrial backhaul was prohibitively expensive. Hughes Network Systems was brought in to address the need for cost‑effective, low‑latency backhaul by deploying the Hughes HX satellite solution.

Hughes Network Systems implemented a Multiple Operator Radio Access Network (MORAN) using the Hughes HX satellite backhaul with colocated terminals at each cell site, allowing multiple operators to share infrastructure and delivering uniform CapEx/Opex regardless of distance. The Hughes solution provided low latency and jitter, efficient bandwidth coding and dynamic traffic management, enabling Majunusa to wholesale and manage end‑to‑end cellular backhaul, bring first‑time cellular service to remote communities, and reduce operational costs while maintaining best‑in‑class throughput on satellite links.
