Case Study: HISPASAT closes Colombia’s digital divide with Hughes Network Systems' HX satellite solution

A Hughes Network Systems Case Study

Preview of the HISPASAT Case Study

HISPASAT Satellite and Hughes HX System Help Colombian Government Close the Digital Divide with Internet Access

HISPASAT, working with Colombia’s Vive Digital program, needed to bring reliable Internet to remote Andean schools, kiosks and communities that are unreachable by terrestrial networks. To meet that challenge HISPASAT partnered with TV Prensa and selected Hughes Network Systems’ Hughes HX satellite solution to deliver broadband service via the HISPASAT satellite to public kiosks and education sites.

Hughes Network Systems deployed a Hughes HX satellite hub and 650 customer premise terminals over HISPASAT’s satellite, using a scalable, high‑bandwidth dual‑band (Ku/Ku‑extended) design with remote transponder switching for flexible operations. The deployment immediately connected hundreds of kiosks, paved the way for an expected roll‑out to over 6,600 remote sites in 2014, and supported Vive Digital’s national expansion of Internet access—contributing to broader digital inclusion and rapid uptake of email, social media and educational content in isolated communities.
