Grupo Pegaso and Hughes JUPITER™ System Address Digital Divide in Rural Mexico

The Secretariat of Communications and Transportation Mexico faced a major digital‑divide challenge: millions in rural and mountainous areas lacked wired broadband access, and the SCT needed to deliver reliable Internet and Wi‑Fi to schools, clinics and government sites across a vast territory—more than 5,000 locations in a four‑month window. To meet that need, Pegaso Banda Ancha partnered with Hughes Network Systems, deploying the Hughes JUPITER™ System as the satellite broadband platform.

Hughes Network Systems’ JUPITER solution, delivered via Pegaso and SCT’s Bicentenario satellite capacity, provided high‑throughput VSAT terminals and gateway services that enabled fast deployment and efficient bandwidth use. The project put JUPITER terminals at 5,062 sites across 362 municipalities in 29 states (serving the SCT goal of reaching 100,000+ rural residents), extending indoor and outdoor Wi‑Fi, connecting schools, clinics and community centers, and delivering measurable gains in coverage, capacity (≈20% more than competing solutions) and operational efficiency.
