Preview of the AltegroSky and KB Iskra Case Study

AltegroSky and KB Iskra deploy 1,300+ community Wi‑Fi hotspots with Hughes in Siberia

The customer, AltegroSky and KB Iskra, two satellite service operators in Russia, faced the challenge of providing affordable and reliable broadband internet to millions of people living in remote, low-income villages across Siberia, where terrestrial internet access was unavailable or too expensive. Partnering with Hughes Network Systems, they utilized the vendor's satellite-enabled Community Wi-Fi solutions to address this connectivity gap.

The solution implemented by Hughes involved deploying over 1,300 Wi-Fi hotspots connected via its JUPITER System VSAT technology. This allowed users to purchase flexible data plans and connect to the internet from their homes or personal devices. As a result, Hughes helped its customers cost-effectively bring high-speed internet access to these isolated communities, with the service collectively connecting about 90% of their B2C subscribers and having significant social impact.
