Case Study: Beijing Electric Power Corporation achieves Smart Grid and four-network convergence with Huawei xPON

A Huawei Case Study

Preview of the Beijing Electric Power Corporation (BEPC) Case Study

xPON Powers the Smart Grid

Beijing Electric Power Corporation (BEPC), a subsidiary of State Grid Corporation of China, needed to accelerate its Smart Grid rollout across Beijing and surrounding areas. The utility faced unreliable legacy wireless networks and growing requirements for distribution automation, smart metering, and future “four-network convergence” across smart grid, data, video, and voice services. Huawei’s xPON solution was selected to provide a more reliable, high-bandwidth foundation for these critical services.

Huawei deployed a field-proven xPON network using OLTs, industrial-grade ONUs, and optical fiber composite low-voltage cabling to connect meter data and FTTH services with strong security and resilience. The solution enabled real-time, two-way power consumption data collection, remote management, and scalable support for multiple interfaces and services, while reducing maintenance effort through unified network management. As a result, BEPC gained a more reliable, IP-based smart grid communications platform and a clear path toward four-network convergence.
