Case Study: China Three Gorges Project Corporation achieves reliable hydroelectric network operations with Huawei transmission solutions

A Huawei Case Study

Preview of the China Three Gorges Project Corporation Case Study

World’s Largest Dam Cuts Costs

China Three Gorges Project Corporation (CTGPC), operator of the world’s largest hydropower project, needed to modernize an aging communications network originally built with SDH devices. Rising service demands, obsolete equipment, limited spare parts, and strict reliability requirements for mission-critical services like power dispatching, emergency command, OA, telephone dispatch, and video surveillance made the existing optical network increasingly difficult to maintain. The remote and complex geography also meant some sites could not be fully connected by fiber, creating an additional integration challenge.

Huawei provided a transmission network solution built around ASON-based optical networking, OSN device protection, and U2000 unified network management, with microwave integrated into the optical network for a converged wired/wireless system. Huawei also deployed geographic hot backup and real-time monitoring to improve resilience. The result was a more reliable, centrally managed network that reduced OPEX, enabled faster end-to-end service deployment and troubleshooting, and created a model for applying ASON technology in the power generation industry.
