Case Study: China Merchants Group achieves unified, energy-efficient IT operations with Huawei

A Huawei Case Study

Preview of the China Merchants Group (CMG) Case Study

Unified IT Network Pays Dividends

China Merchants Group (CMG), a major Hong Kong-based conglomerate with businesses spanning logistics, finance, real estate, and shipping, was struggling with a fragmented legacy IT environment. Its distributed data centers and 38 separate equipment rooms created low reliability, difficult information gathering, high maintenance overhead, and rising CAPEX. Huawei was brought in to help modernize the IT infrastructure and improve service availability.

Huawei designed and implemented a unified IT system using a cloud-pipe-device approach, including a service-oriented cloud platform, a broader service network plan, and unified device management with secure Huawei eLTE-enabled terminals. The new setup cut CMG’s PUE from 1.9 to below 1.5, reduced energy consumption by 30% and electricity costs by USD 5 million annually, and improved reliability to 99.842% with only 96 minutes of service interruption per year.
