A Huawei Case Study
Shandong Electric Power Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of State Grid Corporation of China, needed to modernize its provincial backbone network to support a rapidly expanding Smart Grid across 17 cities. The utility faced strict security and stability requirements for critical protection applications, growing IP and SAN traffic, and the challenge of migrating from legacy SDH/PDH services to a mix of traditional and new high-bandwidth services.
Huawei proposed a Smart Grid backbone based on next-generation OTN and ASON technologies using OptiX OSN8800/OSN6800 devices, ROADMs, and advanced grooming capabilities. Huawei’s solution improved protection for both optical and electrical layers, simplified service delivery, and enhanced network security; after one year of operation, Shandong Electric Power reported more robust transmission, easier service handling, and energy-efficient, low-noise equipment that supported SGCC’s Smart Grid goals.
