PEA Transforms Power Transmission Network

The Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), Thailand’s largest power company, needed to modernize its legacy transmission and distribution network as its Smart Grid expanded. Older SDH equipment was reaching end of life, spare parts were becoming hard to find, and the existing network could not support growing IP-based services such as SCADA and video surveillance. Huawei worked with PEA on a network transformation using a hybrid MSTP transport approach.

Huawei implemented a universal transport solution that combined SDH hard pipes for critical TDM services with MPLS-TP soft pipes for IP traffic, while reusing existing devices and NMS to ease migration. The solution also added built-in WDM and ultra-long-haul transmission to increase bandwidth and reduce fiber and construction needs. As a result, PEA gained secure, seamless network evolution, support for All-IP services, and flexible scalability for the next three to five years, while covering a network serving 99.98% of Thailand across 512 substations, 914 offices, and 24,000 kilometers of fiber.
