A Huawei Case Study
ofo, the Beijing-based bike-sharing leader, needed to improve user experience and operational efficiency as rising demand exposed issues with damaged bikes, difficult unlocking/payment processes, inefficient equipment management, and limited data collection. The company also needed a smarter, more sustainable business model that could better support high-value users and commuter demand.
In July 2017, ofo partnered with Huawei and China Telecom to deploy NB-IoT smart locks using Huawei’s enterprise IoT solution, including smart chips, networking, and an IoT platform. Huawei’s technology enabled wide coverage, lower power consumption, and faster response times, cutting unlock/payment time from 25 seconds to under 5 seconds and extending battery life from 1–2 months to more than 2 years. The result was better bike availability, quicker unlocking, reduced maintenance costs, and improved lifecycle management and service quality.
