Insurer Upgrades to OceanStor VTL Storage

CSS Insurance, the second largest medical insurance company in Switzerland, needed to replace its physical tape libraries and upgrade its aging virtual tape library (VTL) environment as backup volumes grew beyond 30 TB per day. Its legacy system struggled with performance, capacity, reliability, and disaster recovery, taking about 18 hours to back up 20 TB at one data center and lacking proper geographical redundancy. Huawei provided the OceanStor VTL Solution to address these backup and DR challenges.

Huawei deployed four OceanStor VTL6000 units in a cross-backup design across CSS’s data centers, enabling local backup plus remote replication for disaster recovery. With global data deduplication, only unique data blocks were transmitted, cutting bandwidth use by 90% and conserving 83% of storage capacity. The new Huawei solution reduced backup time so CSS could complete all node backups in 6.5 hours, allowing daily backups instead of only nights and weekends, while improving reliability and scalability.
