A Huawei Case Study
Guangdong Power Grid Corporation, the largest provincial power grid operator in China, needed to strengthen protection for its complex IT and control networks as it expanded to meet growing electricity demand. Its horizontal and vertical network architecture had security gaps between real-time zones and across upper- and lower-level dispatch networks, creating risks of malware spread, outages, and wider operational disruption. Huawei was brought in to help secure these critical systems.
Huawei deployed USG5000 unified security gateways, firewalls, VPN encryption, and redundant backup links to isolate traffic between security zones, authenticate access, and protect communications across provincial, municipal, county, and substation networks. The result was improved reliability and security, with no information security incidents, operation accidents, or crucial data leakage issues reported in the two years after deployment. Huawei’s solution also delivered high resilience, including an MTBF of up to 500,000 hours and protection switching in less than 0.1 seconds.
