Huawei Powers-up Smart Grid Upgrade

Hebei Power, a major power-grid operator in China’s south Hebei province, needed to replace an outdated tangent-ring backbone communications network that could not keep up with rapid expansion or the high-capacity, real-time data demands of smart-grid operations. The utility wanted a more reliable, scalable backbone to support six municipal utilities and more than 100 county-level operations.

Huawei upgraded Hebei Power’s backbone using OSN7500 and OSN3500 intelligent optical network devices, transforming the network from a tangent-ring design to a mesh topology. Huawei’s solution improved service continuity, bandwidth utilization, and maintenance efficiency, while delivering 10 GE-capable transmission capacity and up to 99.9999% reliability. The new network now supports smart-grid services including data, voice, and HD video conferencing.
