A Huawei Case Study
Turkmenistan’s Ministry of Railway Transportation needed to modernize an outdated Soviet-era railway communications network that was limiting train speeds, reducing operational efficiency, and making it harder to secure nearly 5,000 kilometers of track. Huawei was brought in to help upgrade the railway’s communications infrastructure, including a GSM-R-based solution for the main lines.
Huawei implemented an end-to-end GSM-R solution covering core and access networks, along with supporting systems such as telephony, video conferencing, and power supply. The upgrade delivered full wireless coverage across railway sections and helped improve dispatch coordination, boosting freight and passenger capacity while supporting future evolution to LTE. Huawei also upgraded communications systems for more than 1,200 kilometers of railway lines.
