Huawei Helps HEC Build an Efficient and Reliable National Research & Education Network

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan needed to redesign its Pakistan Education & Research Network (PERN) into a high-speed, dedicated national research and education network, called PERN2. The existing network had limited bandwidth, lacked integrated voice/video services, and could not support growing demand across universities and campuses. Huawei was selected to help build the next-generation network platform.

Huawei implemented a layered IP/MPLS network using NE80E core routers, NE40E-X8 provincial routers, and NE20E access routers to connect universities and institutions over 10GE links. The solution improved security, reliability, and service separation while enabling services such as VoIP, video conferencing, online libraries, and high-speed Internet. By 2013, PERN2 connected more than 180 institutes and provided a scalable foundation for future expansion across Pakistan.
