Huawei Helps Etihad Rail Build GCC Railway Network

Etihad Rail, the UAE’s national freight and passenger railway operator, needed a communications backbone for its 1,200-kilometer GCC railway project that could support European rail interoperability standards in extreme desert conditions. To meet the requirements of its ETCS Level 2 signaling system, Etihad Rail selected Huawei’s GSM-R-based railway communications solution.

Huawei implemented a highly reliable Railway Operational Communication Solution with redundant, hot-backup network elements, geographic redundancy for core equipment and base station controllers, automatic disaster recovery, and dual-layer radio coverage. The solution passed interoperability tests with major signaling and communications providers, and Stage 1 of the project will support 30 million tons of freight and 160 million passengers annually, helping set the foundation for the next two stages.
