A Huawei Case Study
21Vianet Group, China’s largest telecommunications-neutral internet infrastructure service provider, needed to rapidly expand its data center capacity to meet rising demand from major enterprise customers like Microsoft and IBM. Its biggest Beijing facility, Xingguang Yingshiyuan, had to be delivered quickly while still meeting Tier 3+ standards, optimizing both capital and operating costs, and achieving cutting-edge energy efficiency. Huawei was brought in to help address these challenges.
Huawei designed the site as a modular data center, shifting construction from on-site work to factory prefabrication to speed delivery and improve reliability. The solution included 64 Huawei UPS5000 transformerless UPS systems, N+1 power and cooling redundancy, aisle containment, and precision cooling for high-density loads. The results were strong: each project stage was delivered in just 4.5 months, more than 30% faster than traditional data centers, with PUE below 1.5 and cooling efficiency improved by 40%.
