A Huawei Case Study
Office National des Chemins de Fer (ONCF), Morocco’s national railway operator, needed to unify its fragmented dispatching systems across more than 1,800 kilometers of rail lines. Working with Huawei, the project aimed to replace outdated analog voice systems with a unified GSM-R communications network that could support both the country’s new high-speed rail line and its conventional network, while meeting strict reliability, frequency-band, and harsh-environment requirements.
Huawei implemented a staged GSM-R solution with core network nodes, BSCs, optical transmission, and redundant network architecture, including hot-standby backup, disaster recovery, dual wireless networks on high-speed lines, and ring-topology design. Huawei also developed a customized multi-band module to allow future migration from E-GSM to R-GSM without new hardware. The result is nationwide, all-weather digital rail dispatching with targeted reliability of 99.99% for high-speed lines and 99.73% for conventional lines.
