GSM-R Brings High-Speed Rail Out of the Cold

Huawei helped Hada Railway, the Harbin-Dalian High-Speed Railway in Northeast China, address the challenge of running a secure, reliable communications system in extreme cold and at very high speeds. The railway operates in temperatures as low as -40°F (-40°C), with trains traveling up to 186.4 mph (300 km/h), and needed robust train-to-station communications with GSM-R compliance and CTCS L3 control.

Huawei implemented a GSM-R solution featuring hot standby disaster recovery, MSC dual-homing, Mini-A-Flex, BTS ring networking, carrier-frequency redundancy, AFC, and fast-switching algorithms, along with refined frequency planning and distributed base-station design. Huawei’s solution improved network reliability, redundancy, and wireless coverage for Hada Railway, creating a stable foundation for secure and efficient high-speed rail operations.
