Gelsenkirchen: A Small, Smart City with Big Plans

Gelsenkirchen City, a small city in northwest Germany, wanted to improve air quality, boost public safety, and create a smarter, more connected urban environment. To achieve this vision, the city partnered with Huawei and local ICT provider GELSEN-NET to launch the country’s first Safe City initiative, aiming to unify city operations, businesses, and law enforcement through a modern digital infrastructure.

Huawei and GELSEN-NET implemented a Smart City solution built on cloud, network, IoT, and security technologies, along with public Wi-Fi and broadband connectivity. The rollout included a secure cloud data center, an IoT platform, big data and application enablement tools, 13,000 kilometers of fiber, 240 access points, free Wi-Fi across key public areas, and Internet access on buses. As a result, Gelsenkirchen improved service efficiency and decision-making, expanded connectivity for 50,000 public Wi-Fi users, and won Huawei’s 2016 Smart City Award.
