Ethiopia Deploys Rail Services with Huawei 4G LTE Technologies

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital and transportation hub, faced severe traffic congestion and needed a reliable communications foundation for its new light rail system. Huawei was selected to support the Addis Ababa Light Rail Transit project with LTE-based urban rail communications, as the customer needed full-coverage wireless connectivity, unified voice and ticketing services, centralized HD video surveillance, and resilient access networking.

Huawei implemented its Digital Urban Rail Solution, combining urban rail LTE-M, MSTP backbone networking, industrial access routers, SEP rings, and centralized eSight management. The solution enabled multiple services on one network, supported 41 trains across 75 kilometers of rail lines, and reduced trackside equipment and maintenance needs by using only 4 BBUs and 9 RRUs on the 31-kilometer first phase. Huawei’s 9-level QoS, redundant architecture, and centralized alarm management improved reliability, security, and OPEX efficiency.
