EPRI Stays on Task with Eco-Friendly DC

Guangdong Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), the R&D subsidiary of Guangdong Power Grid Company, needed a more eco-friendly data center to support growing data demands while improving resource utilization and reducing energy consumption. Its existing systems were deployed separately, creating idle resources, load imbalances, and unnecessary power use. EPRI worked with Huawei and evaluated the OceanStor 18500 high-end storage platform as part of its virtualization and centralized storage modernization effort.

Huawei implemented a virtualization-based storage solution using OceanStor 18500 to centralize data, balance loads, and improve efficiency. The solution eliminated idle and hot spare disks, reduced service interference with SmartQoS and SmartPartition, and cut total energy consumption by 50%. After go-live, EPRI expanded the system to four controllers and 100 TB of hard disk capacity without sacrificing response speed, confirming Huawei’s solution as a scalable fit for future growth.
