Connect 680,000 Fans in Beijing 2015 IAAF World Championships

The International Association of Athletics Federations needed to provide reliable Wi-Fi for 680,000 spectators at the Beijing 2015 IAAF World Championships in Athletics at the Bird’s Nest, a huge steel-structured stadium that made wireless coverage and capacity especially difficult. Huawei was tasked with solving the challenge, using its Agile Stadium Network Solution and a free-access Wi-Fi deployment to support high-density connectivity in a very demanding venue.

Huawei installed 1,000 access points in just 90 days, carefully planning placement with visual simulation technology to overcome signal interference from the stadium structure. The result was seamless internet access for fans and 16.4 TB of traffic during the event, enabling massive social media sharing and earning strong praise from the IAAF for the quality and speed of the deployment.
