CDMA2000 Infrastructure Creates ‘Digital Mine’

Xinwen Mining Group, a subsidiary of Shandong Energy Group and one of China’s leading coal enterprises, needed to replace an aging underground PHS communication setup and find a more suitable technology after a failed TD-SCDMA pilot. To support its “digital mine” initiative, the company worked with Huawei to explore a 3G CDMA2000-based underground communications platform that could better meet requirements for small size, wide coverage, high capacity, and stronger data capability.

Huawei implemented a 3G CDMA2000 solution that integrated voice, data, SMS, dispatching, video surveillance, monitoring, and personnel positioning into a unified underground network. The result was a safer, more efficient “digital mine” with improved communication quality, unified data transport, and better emergency and operational monitoring; the project also helped Xinwen Mining Group maintain its industry-leading position and set a model for other coal enterprises.
