Training on a Deadline Anthrax and USAMRIID

USAMRIID, the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases, needed to support the cleanup of the Brentwood Post Office after the 2001 anthrax attacks, but its scientists had not yet completed the OSHA-required hazardous waste site certification. Because time was critical and the full training would have taken weeks, HSI was brought in to help prepare the team for work in an uncontrolled hazardous waste environment.

HSI audited job descriptions and training records, performed a gap analysis, and created an abbreviated 16-hour training program that still met the required competencies for OSHA compliance. By cutting the training from 72 hours to 2 days, HSI helped USAMRIID personnel get to the cleanup site within 21 days, avoiding unnecessary delays on a project costing about $250,000 per day.
