A HSI Case Study
U.S. Naval Air Station Keflavik (NASKEF), the host command for U.S. defense activities in Iceland, needed specialized hazardous materials response training for flight line operations. Because the base serviced F-16 fighter jets and was identified by NASA as an emergency landing site for the Space Shuttle, responders had to be prepared for hydrazine fuel incidents in an extreme coastal climate with strong winds, heavy precipitation, and snow.
HSI worked with Navy officials and Keflavik Fire Team representatives to customize safety training, operating guidelines, and response procedures for hydrazine scenarios. HSI also developed alternative equipment and methods that would work in Iceland’s harsh weather conditions, giving the base a more effective HAZMAT response capability; the case study does not provide a specific numeric result, but it highlights a tailored solution designed to improve responder readiness and safety.
