A HSI Case Study
Midwest Electric Utility Provider, a large regional public-utilities company, faced an outdated and incomplete chemical inventory across multiple sites—initially recording over 24,000 SDSs (more than half out of date), no system to track or distribute sheets, and no automated chemical-approval workflow. The provider engaged HSI for On‑Site Inventory (OSI) services and SDS Management to obtain an accurate, site-specific chemical footprint and improve worker safety and regulatory reporting.
HSI used OSI to reduce the SDS collection to 3,700 required sheets, supplied all but 125 SDSs (sourcing the remainder from manufacturers), and implemented its SDS Management platform to automate approval forms, SARA flagging, conditional approvals, and notifications. As a result, HSI delivered 100% SDS compliance across all locations, cut approval time from over a month to less than a week (an improvement of more than 75%), provided real-time throughput reporting, enabled easy OSHA inspection responses, and empowered users to generate compliance reports without additional tech support.
